Kylix with an ancient battle scene
Product Description
A kylix is a type of drinking cup or wine cup that was used in ancient Greece from the 6th century BC. It has a shallow bowl-shaped body with two handles and a stem that connects the bowl to a flat base. The shape of the kylix was designed to allow the drinker to see the wine’s color, clarity, and aroma. Kylikes were often decorated with various scenes, including mythological scenes, athletic competitions, and symposia (drinking parties). Some kylikes were also used as prizes for winners of athletic competitions, and others were commissioned by wealthy patrons as gifts or for use at their own symposia. Internally, the kylix has three painted zones on a black background. The first zone starts with the ancient Greek symbol of the meander, which symbolizes harmony and timelessness. The other two zones feature geometric shapes in red and ochre, while the center is dominated by the depiction of a realistic battle scene. In the battle scene, two men wearing full battle armor (helmet, shield, greaves) advance their spears towards the opposing enemy. The scene is depicted vividly and with great detail, giving the impression of movement and the tintensity in the battle. On the bottom of the kylix, we can distinguish six zones with intricately painted ancient Greek symbols. The triangles and spirals stand out, symbolizing the development and continuity of life. Handmade and hand-painted in Greece. A unique museum-quality artwork!
