Important Set of Three Meiji Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vases Signed by Ota

$65.5 $123.14
An important and exceptionally rare Japanese cloisonné enamel covered jar by Miwa Tomisaburo, executed during the Meiji period and distinguished by the remarkable presence of a signature rendered directly in cloisonné wire on the underside—an exceedingly uncommon and highly significant feature. The vessel is constructed using exceptionally fine silver cloisonné wire, a technically demanding and costly material reserved for works of the highest quality. The deep midnight blue enamel ground provides a rich, luminous field for the finely articulated decoration, creating a striking contrast that enhances the delicacy of the composition. The surface is animated by a sophisticated naturalistic arrangement of iris blossoms, chrysanthemum, and plum branches interwoven with grasses, all rendered with remarkable precision. Sparrows in flight move gracefully across the body, their forms captured with exceptional sensitivity and vitality, bringing a dynamic sense of life and seasonal harmony to the composition. The refinement of the wirework and the controlled application of enamel demonstrate a masterful level of technical and artistic execution. The domed cover is surmounted by an intricately decorated knop featuring floral ornament and geometric borders. The lid itself is further enriched with additional sparrows in flight alongside a butterfly, reinforcing the naturalistic theme while showcasing an extraordinary command of line, balance, and compositional rhythm. Elegantly formed side handles are applied to the body, each decorated with scrolling floral motifs that harmonize seamlessly with the overall design, reinforcing both symmetry and visual cohesion. Of particular importance is the underside, which bears a cloisonné signature executed entirely in wire within a stylized reserve. Such signatures are rarely encountered in cloisonné production and are typically reserved for works of special significance, underscoring the importance and intended prestige of the present example. Works by Miwa Tomisaburo are notably scarce, and examples combining extensive silver wire construction, elaborate naturalistic decoration, and a cloisonné signature represent a level of rarity and desirability of the highest order. A true museum-quality work, this covered jar embodies the pinnacle of Meiji period Japanese cloisonné—uniting rare materials, exceptional technical mastery, and refined artistic vision. 7″ high x 5″ diameter Good condition.
