Exquisite Cloisonné Enamel Vase Birds Pine Celadon Ground, Attributed Hayashi

An exceptionally refined Japanese cloisonné enamel vase from the Meiji period, executed on a rare and highly sophisticated celadon green ground—an uncommon tone in cloisonné requiring advanced control during firing and enamel layering. The surface is elegantly composed with sweeping pine branches extending across the body, accompanied by finely rendered birds in flight. The decoration is executed with remarkable subtlety, employing both silver and gold cloisonné wire: silver wire articulates the foliage with quiet precision, while gold wire defines the birds, creating a nuanced interplay of tone, texture, and light. This deliberate contrast reflects a level of artistic intention and technical mastery associated with the highest tier of Meiji period production. Encircling the shoulder is a continuous band of scrolling karakusa ornament interspersed with stylized blossoms, executed with exceptional clarity and balance. The composition as a whole is notably restrained, allowing the luminous celadon ground to function as an atmospheric field—an approach characteristic of the most refined cloisonné works, where elegance is achieved through control rather than density. The technical execution is of a very high order. The enamel ground is even and softly translucent, while the wirework remains crisp and precisely defined throughout. These qualities point to a workshop of significant skill, most closely aligned with leading Nagoya ateliers. The present example may reasonably be attributed to the circle of Hayashi Kodenji, Hayashi Tanigoro, or the Inaba Cloisonne Company, all of whom are known for producing works of comparable refinement and aesthetic restraint. The absence of a signature is not uncommon among works of this quality, as many high-level cloisonné pieces were originally sold with paper labels that have since been lost.
