Fine Pair of Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vases by Ando with Grapes on White Ground

$48.56 $67.5
A refined and elegantly composed pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel vases produced by the Ando Company during the Showa period (1926–1989), exemplifying the workshop’s continued mastery of the medium into the twentieth century. Each vase is delicately ornamented with suspended clusters of ripening grapes, intertwined with trailing vines and finely shaded leaves. The grapes are rendered in rich, saturated purple tones, while the foliage displays subtle gradations of green, demonstrating a high level of control in enamel application. The composition unfolds naturally across the surface, achieving a sense of movement and balance that is both restrained and sophisticated. Particularly noteworthy is the rare and luminous white enamel ground—an unusual and highly desirable feature in cloisonné production. The pristine white surface enhances the clarity and delicacy of the design, allowing the grapevine motif to appear almost painterly in its execution, while also reflecting the technical precision required to achieve such an even and flawless field. The finesse of the wirework and the controlled transitions of color reflect the hallmark qualities of the Ando workshop of Nagoya, whose works are celebrated for their refinement, consistency, and technical excellence. Building upon the innovations of the Meiji period, Ando continued to elevate cloisonné into the modern era, producing works that combined traditional aesthetics with a heightened sense of elegance and clarity. Founded in the late nineteenth century, the Ando Company remains one of the most respected names in Japanese cloisonné, with pieces held in major collections and admired for their enduring quality and design. 7.5″ high x 4″ diameter Good condition.
